Bulk Sarong Orders: MOQ, Lead Time, and What Drives the Price

The first bulk order is where sourcing mistakes get expensive. A quote that looked competitive grows once freight and duty are added, the minimum turns out to apply per color rather than per design, or production slips past your selling season.
This guide covers the three things that shape every bulk sarong order: the minimum order quantity, the lead time and the price per piece. It also shows how to estimate your landed cost and what to put in a quote request.
How MOQ works for handwoven sarongs
Indonesian textiles are counted in kodi: 1 kodi is 20 pieces. At Heritage Loom, ready designs start from 1 kodi in total, and you can mix motifs and collections as long as the total comes in whole kodi. Custom designs are ordered in whole kodi per design and can't be mixed.
When you compare suppliers, check what the minimum applies to: per design, per colorway or per order. Two quotes with the same headline MOQ can mean very different first orders. Our guide to custom sarong manufacturing explains why handwoven production has a minimum at all. Ordering for a shop in Malaysia or Brunei? Our first-order guide shows how to build a first order in kodi. Buying to resell? Our guide to wholesale sarongs for resellers shows how to plan a first order in kodi.
Lead time: what to expect by volume
At Heritage Loom, orders under 5 kodi (100 pieces) take 7 business days. Orders of 5 kodi or more are scheduled per order, and custom production is confirmed against your specification.
Three things stretch a lead time:
- Volume, because each sarong is woven one at a time.
- Complexity, because ikat yarn is tied and dyed before weaving.
- Approvals, because every sample revision happens before production starts.
Shipping time comes on top. Count back from the date the goods must be on your shelves, and agree the production date in writing.
What drives the price per piece
Two sarongs that look alike in a photo can be priced far apart. These are the factors that move the number:
- Weaving technique. A handloom sarong takes a weaver's time, which sets a price floor that machine-made cloth doesn't have. Our guide to handwoven vs. machine-made sarongs shows how to tell the two apart.
- Yarn. Cotton, rayon, silk blends and polyester differ in cost, feel and drape. Ask for the exact composition on the quote.
- Motif and colors. Ikat motifs and designs with more colors take longer to prepare than simple checks.
- Weave density and size. A denser weave uses more yarn and more time, and a larger finished size uses more of both. Heritage Loom's ready collections, for reference, are woven in cotton at 120 × 125 cm.
- Customization. Custom colorways, woven labels, hangtags and branded packaging add setup and materials.
- Order structure. How you split the order across designs, and whether you need it faster than the standard schedule, both affect the quote.
- Packaging and shipping terms. Gift boxes cost more than bulk cartons, and the Incoterm decides which shipping costs are included in the price.
When two quotes differ, compare them line by line on these factors before you compare the totals.
Estimate your landed cost
The price per piece is only part of what a sarong costs you. Your landed cost adds everything it takes to get the goods onto your shelf:
Landed cost per piece = (goods + freight + insurance + import duty + import taxes + broker and handling fees) ÷ number of pieces
Freight is where volume matters most. Heritage Loom packs 100 pieces per carton, measuring 44 × 36 × 83 cm at about 50 kg, and a 20 ft container holds about 213 cartons, so the freight cost per piece drops sharply once you move from courier to sea freight.
Within ASEAN, a valid Form D can lower the import duty on Indonesian-origin goods. Our guides for Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore and for Thailand cover duties and taxes at each border. Our guide to shipping sarongs from Indonesia covers the documents and packing behind these costs.
What to include in a quote request
A complete request gets you an accurate quote in one round, without back-and-forth. Include:
- the designs from the catalog, or your custom brief;
- the quantity per design, in kodi;
- the destination city and country, and your preferred Incoterm;
- your labeling and packaging needs;
- the date the goods must arrive.
